Manhattan Tap was founded in 1986 and since then has been a major innovative force in New York City's tap community and also on the international stage. The unique blend of tap dance, music, choreography and improvisation is brought together by an ensemble of outstanding dancers who have and showcase their own skills and techniques.
Since 1991, Artistic Director Heather Cornell has been the choreographer of Manhattan Tap and her style is one that defines today's Manhattan Tap Dance Company. Being a co-founder of Manhattan Tap in 1986 helped in this step forward but she is known worldwide for her collaborations on original music for tap. In collaboration with jazz musician and bassist Ray Brown, Cornell has created lengthy pieces using original scores by Brown and the skills and talents of her dance ensemble. Although today Heather Cornell is the Artistic Director of one of North America's most renowned tap dance ensembles, she had also choreographed the Tony-nominated Broadway comedy The Play What I Wrote. Heather Cornell developed her unique style and immense tap skill as an apprentice to Buster Brown, Eddie Brown, with the Copasetics and Silver Bells in New York City, with Cookie Cook and Steve Condos, while traveling in North America to enhance her tapping style.
Today, Heather Cornell is one of the leading tap teachers in the scene today. From original material from her legendary mentors, through the development of her own style and grace, and through her extensive work with the jazz musicians and world music results in a teaching style that is unlike any other.
Manhattan Tap has commissioned many works for some of the world's most influential and talented tap dancers. Tappers such as Steve Condos, "Cookie" Cook, James "Buster" Brown, Diane Walker, Germaine Ingram, Fred Strickler and have even collaborated with Eddie Brown and Harriet Brown. The company has also trained some of the best in today's business, such as Max Pollak, Michael Minery, Roxanne Butterfly, Bob Carrol and Jeannie Hill.
